HISTORY OF TRANSDANUBIAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE
1. The beginning
The first researchers were:
Lajos Hegedűs linguist 1943-
András Babics historian 1944-
After 1945 the Institute was in an ambigous situation for several years.
Finally, in 1943, the institute was supervisd by the Ministry of Education after passing the 1942 parliamentary Act. The Institute was supervised and funded by the supervisory authority.
However, the Institute's staff was not involved in teaching but performed scientific researches only. However, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences before its reorganization in the 1950s had only a few institutions. During its transition the Hungarian Academy of Sciences gradually began to take over the research institutes, but the Transdanubian Research Institute was not among them yet. In 1951, in addition to educational institutions only museums belonged to the Ministry of Education. The Ministry no longer considered the institution to belong to its profile but the Academy still did not take it as its own. In such circumstances, between 1951-54 various plans emerged about the fate of the Institute but there no firm decisions taken. To consolidate the position of the Institute an academic profile was needed to set up.
The studies carried out in this matter found out that a regional research institute investigating regions by different aspects could fit into the Academy's scientific concept. Therefore on 1st January 1955 the Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences took over the Institute and ranked it among its own institutes. This step as a result, increased not only the Transdanubian Research Institute scientific prestage but subsequently regional research, as in other European countries, could continue in academic context. In fact, during this period in other areas of Eastern Europe similar regional research institutes were created , such as in Poland, the Baltic Institute in Torun, the Silesian Institute in Wroclaw, the Western Institute in Poznań, and the Silesian Institute in Opava Moravia.
2 / What was investigated in the Transdanubian Research Institute?
The development of a scientific institute is best shown by the progress of the problems that its researchers dealt with and resolved.
The Transdanubian Research Institute's has undergone several scientific research periods through its history.
